Dataset: Healthcare Cost Report Information System (HCRIS)

Basic Information
Dataset Full Name Healthcare Cost Report Information System
Dataset Acronym HCRIS
Summary

The HCRIS is used in order to compute the cost-to-charge ratio and determine the “cost” of providing services by different institutions. Cost Report files exist for:

  • Hospitals (CMS-2552-96 and CMS-2552-10),
  • Skilled Nursing Facilities (CMS-2540-96 and CMS-2540-10),
  • Home Health Agencies (CMS-1728-94), Renal Facilities (CMS-265-94 and CMS-265-11),
  • Health Clinics (CMS-222-92),
  • Hospices (CMS-1984-99),
  • Community Mental Health Centers (CMS-2088-92), and
  • Freestanding Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC14).

The files exist in a relational database (tables) format. There are three files associated with each dataset: the report file, the alpha-numeric file, and the numeric file. A fourth file, the rollup file, additionally exists for Hospitals (CMS-2552-96), Skilled Nursing Facilities (CMS-2540-96), and Home Health Agencies (CMS-1728-94). These files can be linked with each other by a unique key: the report record number.
